A Guide to Betting on the Thousand Guineas

The Thousand Guineas is a Group 1 three-year-old fillies’ race run under Set Weights conditions during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. It is one of the premier fillies’ carnival races and allows the 3yo fillies to stretch to 1600m for the first time.

The 2022 Thousand Guineas will be run on Wednesday, 12th October, at the Caulfield racecourse with total prize money of $1,000,000. Be sure to check the best Thousand Guineas betting odds prior to gaining an advantage.

Historical Significance Of The Thousand Guineas

With a rich history, the Thousand Guineas is a significant part of the Spring Racing Carnival. It is one of the first opportunities for fillies to test themselves over a mile at Group 1 level and is the female-only equivalent of the Caulfield Guineas. The race has been shuffled around the schedule and has its race day, “Thousand Guineas Day”, which is held mid-week.

With connections reluctant to run their horses over the more extended trip of the Group 1 VRC Oaks later in the Spring, the Thousand Guineas has fast become “Grand Final Day” for the best 3yo fillies in the land. The biggest trainers and owners target the race hoping to add some valuable Group 1 form to their filly’s CV before sending her out for a spell. The big prize money also helps!

Famous Winners Of The Thousand Guineas

Past winners Atlantic Jewel, Alinghi and Miss Finland head an impressive honour roll of Thousand Guineas winners.. Iconic trainers Bart Cummings, Lee Freedman and David Hayes, are the most successful Thousand Guineas trainers, with four winners each since 1983, and Cummings’ grandson James trained the winner in 2019. Champion jockey Damien Oliver has ridden the winner four times which is by far the most wins by any current hoop.

How To Bet On The Thousand Guineas

The Group 2 Sir Edward Manifold Stakes has been the best lead-up race far and away, providing half of the Thousand Guineas winners since 2000. The Flight Stakes run at Randwick is another race that has proved a good form reference, with three recent winners participating. Horses drawn towards the rails have fared well recently, with those drawn out wide struggling. AMPHRITRITE (gate 15 2018) is the only horse to have jumped from a double-figure barrier and won the Thousand Guineas in the last 15 years.

Favourites have struggled recently, with FLIT ($2.4 in 2019) the only favourite to salute in the last five years. Last year’s race was a blowout, with YEARNING winning at $28.
