The Maid of Honor Checklist

Being chosen as a maid of honor is a fantastic feeling. It means you are especially important to the bride, and taking on this role is truly an honor. It also means that you are not taking on a lot of responsibilities. As the MOH, you become the bride’s right-hand person, their constant support system. It is no easy task, but if you follow this checklist, you will succeed.

Be the Leader and the Support

Being asked to be the MOH means you are the go-to person and are basically in charge of all other bridesmaids. This is helpful for the bride so they do not have the constant burden of communicating with all the bridesmaids on top of planning the wedding. This way, she can give you the information to the other girls.

You are also the consistent support for the bride with whatever they need. For example, dress shopping is one of the most important parts of wedding planning for most brides. If she has chosen to have you accompany her along with other loved ones, it is vital that you are there for her and gives her your honest opinion, but not too honest.

If she loves a dress, support her choice and ensure others around you also cheer her on. Once she chooses a dress, be sure to ask the staff how you will also be bustling her dress on the day of the wedding. This is another essential job of a MOH.

Compose a Speech

If you have been chosen for the MOH position, that usually comes with giving a speech. The earlier you learn how to write a maid of honor speech, the better. That way, you are not scrambling close to the wedding date to write something.

No matter if you decide to go sentimental, sweet, or funny, all that matters, in the end, is that you flawlessly reflect on your relationship with the bride and how perfect her partner is. Just be sure not to mention any of her exes or any embarrassing moments she would not want to be shared in front of friends and family.

Plan the Bridal Shower and Bachelorette Party

Traditionally, the bride’s mother or future mother-in-law will plan the bridal shower. Although the MOH can also take this job on, or at the very least, assist in the planning. Some duties you may be in charge of include invitations, games, or decor. Since you are very close to the bride, your input for the bridal shower will prove to be invaluable.

Along with that, as the MOH, you are in charge of planning a fantastic bachelorette party. Remember, it is for the bride, not for you, so plan something that you know she will like. Not all brides want a crazy bar night with strippers. She may want a low-key party that includes going to a spa for the weekend. Take her input and plan a party to make her feel extra special before she ties the knot.

Be There for the Bride Before, During, and After

As a MOH, you must help the bride before, during, and after the wedding. All pre-wedding needs, such as packing for the honeymoon, will go more smoothly with you by her side. She will most likely be scatterbrained, so your presence will help her remember things she may otherwise forget.

On the wedding day, it will be your duty to manage the getting ready process and ensure every bridesmaid is on time and ready when it is time for pictures. You will also be in charge of holding the bride’s bouquet during the ceremony, and you may even be needed to hold up her skirt if she needs to use the restroom at some point during the day.

Finally, as the day unwinds, help as the day ends. This may include ensuring the gifts are not left behind and that all the bridesmaids take their belongings when leaving.

You are valuable to the bride, and if you follow this checklist, you will prove that her decision to make you her MOH was the best choice.
