As a parent, you probably dread those two horrible little words “I’m bored!” They have the potential to signal all kinds of mischief, so your best bet is to head them off by providing plenty of creative activities to keep your kids busy. If you’re at a loss for new ideas, then check out some of the following. If they work, you’ll hear those two words a lot less.
Character Play
Begin by offering your kids opportunities for creative character play. Allow them to choose a couple of their favorite characters from books or cartoon shows, and then help them build a little world with these characters. They might like Bruno Thomas and Friends, for instance, or My Little Pony or Star Wars. Give them some action figures or dolls and a few accessories, but also encourage them to make more accessories, set up play spaces and create stories with these characters. This will keep them engaged for hours.
Books
Never underestimate the power of a good book to keep boredom at bay. Start reading to your kids in their infancy so that they associate books with fun and comfort. As they start reading on their own, provide plenty of books at their level and a few challenging volumes, too, to hold their interest. Arts and Crafts
Depending on your kids’ ages and skill levels, you can supply them with a selection of arts and crafts projects. Even young children can enjoy drawing and coloring, and older kids might like to try models, sewing or clay sculpting. Start with small projects to make sure your kids like them and be aware that you might have to try a few crafts before you find a winner. Puzzles and Games
Puzzles and games are another creative, boredom-busting option. These might be puzzle books, board or card games or jigsaw puzzles according to your kids’ abilities. Challenge them a bit, too. When they master one level of a puzzle or game, move them up to the next to keep them interested and coming back for more. Let your kids try out all kinds of different games, too. You can exchange with friends or relatives on occasion to save money or shop for new options at thrift stores or garage sales. Just make sure each game has all its pieces.
A Drama of Their Own
If you have several children or if your kids’ cousins or friends are always at your house, you might suggest that they put on a little play. Check out some one-act options for kids online, and present a couple of possibilities. When they’ve selected their favorite, help them cast parts and brainstorm what needs to be done to put on a successful play. They can create costumes and sets, learn their lines, rehearse together and eventually put on a performance for friends, relatives and neighbors.
Musical Activities
Along with drama, you might get your kids interested in music. Offer music lessons, but be careful not to make practice a chore to be dreaded. Music should be fun. Provide plenty of creative ways for your kids to listen to their favorite music, sing, dance, compose songs of their own and practice their vocals or instruments. Don’t hesitate to sing and play with them, too. You’ll all have fun.
Cooking Fun
Finally, if your kids show an interest in cooking, you can let them try their hands at some simple meals and snacks. Show them how to search for recipes in books or online, assemble ingredients, prepare foods and serve their creations attractively. Don’t let them out of clean-up afterward either. It’s part of cooking, too. Always supervise young children in their cooking endeavors, but definitely encourage them to practice this life skill.
There is no reason for your kids to complain of boredom if you’re ready to go with some of these creative activities when those two little words “I’m bored!” threaten to ruin your day.
